In the state of California a licensed physical therapist can treat patients without a referral from a physician for the first 45 days or 12 visits , whichever comes first. However, to ensure a proper continuum of care, we ask that you contact your physician prior to the 30 day mark and ask for a referral that we may have on file.
Your comfort and care is of utmost importance to us. This is why having some information about what a pelvic PT visit entails will be helpful to mentally, physically and emotionally prepare you.
Your first visit with us is called an "Initial Evaluation". This is when we get to know you and the reason why you are seeking care from a pelvic PT. Your full medical history is reviewed and a comprehensive physical is exam is performed.
There are several components to a pelvic physical therapy exam. One is external, which consists of checking posture, strength, range of motion, balance, soft tissue and performing of certain physical tasks as needed. The other is an internal pelvic exam. This consists of checking the structures of the pelvis intravaginally or intrarectally which would help your physical therapist determine what course of treatment would be the most beneficial to you.
We understand that you may not be ready for an internal examination and that is completely OK! We will work with you in any way you feel most comfortable and will never push for an internal assessment.
We believe in putting our patients first and providing compassionate care that meets their unique needs and goals. For this reason, you will always be treated by a physical therapist who will follow you through your pelvic healthcare journey. We do not staff therapy aides or technicians so you will have peace of mind that the person with you is highly trained, skilled and educated in their field.
